This is something that I have ran into quite a bit lately. It goes by many names, some of the ones I have come across:

  • Windows Antivirus 2008
  • XP Antivirus 2008
  • XP Security Center
  • Antivirus 2008

All of the many variants of this spyware/malware are grouped under the name SmitFraud and are some of the hardest infections to get rid of that I have come across so far. The best tool for removal that I have found is SmitFraudFix.

Download the tool and follow the instructions on the page for removal. All of the steps are important so follow the instructions exactly as they are or you may get less than stellar results. Afterwards it is a good idea to run a spyware removal tool and anti virus software to make sure there are no other infections lingering around.

Hopefully this will help you get rid of this p.i.t.a. for good. Just an FYI I have seen PCs that were cleaned after an infection but still had problems, so even thought this will clean the nefarious files it may not be able to repair all of the damage done by SmitFraud. Good luck!!!
