Rename Multiple Files in Vista

Posted in: Tips & Tricks

At some point you may need to rename a bunch of files at once on your computer. This is a simple little trick for renaming files in a batch on Vista using a common file name and numbers added in sequence automatically.

Here’s how:

  1. Highlight (select) all the files in the folder that need to be changed.
  2. Right click and select Rename.
  3. Type in a name you want to use for all files selected and hit Enter.

Now the first file that was selected in the folder will have just the common name and all the other files that were selected will have the common name plus (2), (3), and so on.

Example:

file-test.txt
file-test (2).txt
file-test (3).txt
