Security 101: 6 Simple Steps To More Secure Computing

Posted in: Blog

Security is one of those topics that is all too often ignored by the general computing public to their own detriment. I have put together a very simple, common sense list of steps you can take to keep yourself a little more secure while enjoying the benefits of today’s connected computing world.

1. Update your software – The simplest and most effective way to stay secure is to update your software regularly and stop ignoring those automatic updates that keep nagging you to be installed. Another tip related to this is to update to the latest version of your software.

2. Be Aware – Safe computing is everyone’s responsibility, even yours. Avoid clicking on suspicious links and opening attachments on emails unless you have verified that it was sent to you on purpose. Use caution when perusing through social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, etc.

3. Leverage free resources – Many IT companies offer free security tools and resources that anyone can take advantage of to better protect themselves from the latest threats. Microsoft Security Essentials, for example, provides free, anti-virus protection for Windows based PCs.

4. Don’t forget about mobile devices – there is a lot of information stored on your phone, USB drives, tablets and/or notebook computers. Make sure they are secure with passwords, passcodes, and encryption in possible.

5. Back up your data – you don’t know how many people make the mistake of not backing up their data and with so many services that will back up your data automatically over the internet I don’t understand why. Obviously you should look for a reputable company and a reasonable price, but most services cost about $5 per month for unlimited backup storage. To me it’s a no-brainer.
