Apple Mobile Device Service (AMDS) Causing Slowness with iTunes 10.4

Posted in: Blog, PC Support

Some people have been experiencing issues with the latest version of Apple’s iTunes software. There are various symptoms including slowness of your computer system and even overheating (mostly on laptops). What most user’s have reported is that CPU usage for the AppleMobileDeviceService.exe service either spikes, hogging a lot of resources, or it stays at a constant 25 percent of CPU usage for extended periods of time. I ran into this problem recently and here is what I did to fix the issue…

First thing you will need to do is uninstall all Apple software on your system. Make sure the following applications are removed, in the order listed, through the Control Panel applet on your PC:

  1. iTunes
  2. QuickTime
  3. Apple Software Update
  4. Apple Mobile Device Support
  5. Bonjour
  6. Apple Application Support (iTunes 9 or later)

Reboot.

The next thing you need to do is download iTunes from the Apple website and reinstall.

I found those steps listed here and there are some other helpful tips and tricks here as well. Hope this helps, if you have any additions or updates please leave a comment.

Have found at someone else’s suggestion that after several days of uninstalls, reboots, and re-installs that did not work I ran the following from the command prompt in the run window:

netsh winsock reset

then reboot, all was and has been fine since.
